Washington State Fair – Gold Gate

K/O Architects and Fairground Planners were commissioned to design a unique and identifiable entry structure. The overhead canopy is a tensile fabric stretched over a custom designed framing system. This will allow ticket taking and security measures to occur under cover protecting workers and volunteers from the intense Pacific Northwest Sun and unpredictable precipitation.

The Gold Gate is a prominent entrance to the Washington State Fairgrounds in Puyallup, Washington. Situated on the northeast side of the fairgrounds, it serves as a primary access point for visitors attending various events throughout the year. Because of this K/O recommended that this entry include a large “W” creating an Instagram moment opportunity.

For those planning to attend events at the Washington State Fairgrounds, the Gold Gate offers a convenient and vibrant entry point, surrounded by key venues and amenities.

Key Features and Nearby Attractions

  • Gold Gate Plaza: Just inside the Gold Gate, this plaza offers free entertainment during the fair, including live music, comedy acts, and other performances, making it a lively spot for attendees.
  • Expo Hall: Located immediately inside the Gold Gate, the Expo Hall is a versatile, climate-controlled venue spanning approximately 20,000 square feet. It hosts a variety of events year-round, from trade shows to private celebrations.
  • Pavilion: Also, near the Gold Gate, the Pavilion is a two-story facility offering over 46,000 square feet of space. It’s commonly used for shopping during the fair.
  • Nearby Food Vendors: Visitors entering through the Gold Gate can enjoy treats from vendors such as Bean Hut Espresso and Pioneer Popcorn, which are nearby.

Parking and Accessibility

The Gold Gate is adjacent to one of the fairgrounds’ main parking areas, providing convenient access for attendees. During major events like the Washington State Fair, VIP parking is available across from the Gold Gate for a premium fee. Because of the gate’s location near South Meridian street, it was K/O’s recommendation that vehicle crash bollards should be installed.

Recent Developments

The Gold Gate underwent renovations to enhance the visitor experience. Improvements include colored concrete striped paving drawing patron into the grounds, other aesthetic updates, and the reconstruction of the water fountain.
