To relieve overcrowding for its 9,000-plus members, the Walnut Creek YMCA in Des Moines hired K/O to expand their current branch. The project utilized the services of a design/build contractor and a fast track delivery. The focus of the design was image and program enhancements. The east facing, crescent roofed structure’s high windows spill light to the new multi-purpose gym and fitness areas on the upper level by day and glow as a sign post to the city by night (marking the western entrance to West Des Moines along the Interstate-235 corridor). The western addition is a nice cap to the light filled interior corridor which features a two story termination showcasing a “floating” stair and ramp to gain access to the expanded cardio room. Other improvements included an updated second floor spinning room and a new aerobics studio on the main level. Other new main level spaces include entry, nursery, community room, and YMCA offices.
