Polk County River Place
Polk County River Place
Office – Remodel – LEED Silver
Des Moines, Iowa
Area: 147,000 SF
Initially constructed in 1970, this former big box commercial center has been converted into a county-owned office and conference center for nearly 400 employees, efficiently consolidating as many as ten different county and state departments. The building’s signature feature is a 300 foot long by 25 foot high structural glass curtain wall that defines the entry progression and the southern edge of the center. It is the largest structural glass curtain wall currently constructed in the state.
The building is an example of energy efficiency for the local government – and has recently received LEED Silver certification. A majority of the building’s walls, floors and roof structure were salvaged. The design includes natural lighting features throughout and new, energy efficient heating and cooling systems. The sustainable aspects of this building go beyond the structure itself, as it has become a learning tool and inspiration for those who work and visit.
