This was the first built mall installation that Staples corporate had ever attempted within their retail chain. K/O worked closely with the local mall representatives and Staples corporate staff to modify their standard specifications for something other than a new stand alone building. Several programmatic challenges arose due to the fact that this was an existing structure, with the introduction of two separate entrances (interior mall side and exterior street side), and the placement of a loading dock truck bay that was in close proximity to the store’s main entrance. These difficulties did not prove insurmountable and were handled as K/O worked through several creative design solutions. The new store was fast-tracked and completed in five months from the start of demolition.
